What is a Mental Health Evaluation?

A mental health evaluation is an exam of your emotional health that assists a mental health professional in diagnosing a mental disorder or illness.  Mental disorders are common and affect more than half of all Americans at some point in their lives. There are many types of mental disorders.

The effects of mental disorders range from mild to severe to life-threatening. Fortunately, many people with mental disorders can be successfully treated with medicine and/or talk therapy.

Health professionals utilize screenings, assessments and evaluations to help assess a person’s mental health and wellness. A primary care provider may use a mental health screening to see if a person would benefit from seeing a mental health professional. While a behavioral health assessment assists a counselor or therapist in the creation of a unique treatment plan that will help guide the person’s treatment.

Through a series of questions and physical tests, a mental health evaluation helps to diagnose mental disorders. A mental health evaluation is performed by a psychologist or psychiatrist and gives medical professionals a picture of the way a person feels, reasons, thinks and remembers.
