My Approach to Helping

Melissa Spanton is a Licensed Master of Social Work or LMSW. She earned her master’s degree from Idaho State University in 2022. Her first internship included group projects and one on one therapy with seniors who lived at Syringa Chalet in Blackfoot, Idaho. Her second internship included working in the START program (Student Transitions and Retention Track) with adults whose goal was to go to college and they needed extra support to do so. The START program at Idaho State University included group work, EQ or emotional intelligence learning, and one on one therapy. She completed her capstone project on preventing suicide in LGBTQIA+ youth and strives to provide them the therapeutic support that they need. Melissa has also received training in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Financial Therapy, Suicide Prevention, and Trauma Informed Care.

Melissa is passionate about working with others to improve their quality of life and give them the tools to navigate everyday issues that inevitably arise. She believes that attitude is important and that it takes consistent work to have a daily positive outlook, with support and collaboration being a key element to health and well-being.

When she is not working Melissa likes to practice yoga, play with her grandchildren, cook meals for her family, dance, and sing karaoke. Setting goals for well-being and consistent improvement are on her agenda for life.

Therapy Modes

Modes and types of mental health care are as varied as the individuals who seek therapeutic support. While there are some therapeutic models that are more popular than others, there is no one-size-fits-all solution to mental health care. Nuances in the types and modes of therapy will support different people in different ways.

Depending on the situation in which an individual or group of individuals are seeking therapeutic support, there are several different modes of therapy that Melissa utilizes.

  • Individuals
  • Family Therapy
  • Marriage & Couples Counseling
  • Relationship Counseling
  • Telehealth

Therapy Approaches

Psychotherapy, also referred to as talk therapy, psycho-social therapy, counseling, or, simply, therapy, is the primary method for treating mental health problems by talking with a mental health provider. The goal is the help an individual better understand their mental health and teach strategies and tools that manage unhealthy thoughts and behaviors.

While there are many approaches to psychotherapy, there is no single approach that works for everyone. A  therapist may use a blended approach, sampling techniques from several different types of psychotherapy. The kind of psychotherapy a person receives depends on his or her own unique needs.

Below are some of the types of psychotherapy Melissa utilizes.

Screenings, Assessments & Evaluations

Mental health determination tools are used throughout the therapeutic process to determine whether someone could benefit from seeking professional mental health treatment, describe and diagnose problems, increase knowledge, insight and understanding. These tools aid both the patient and professional in creating or modifying treatment plans and measuring progress during the treatment.

Mental Health Screenings are informal symptom checks.
Typically checklists or short questionnaires that ask people to consider if they experience a given symptom and answer yes or no.
Melissa provides Mental Health Screenings

Behavioral Health Assessments can be informal or formal

They give a professional insight into a person’s emotional state. It also looks at how they think, reason and remember.
Melissa provides the following Behavioral Health Assessments:

  • Anxiety Screenings & Assessments
  • Attention Disorders (ADHD)

Mental Health Evaluations are formal

The intent is to provide increased awareness of why an individual may be struggling to meet developmental, academic, or social milestones.
