My Approach to Helping

Life can take detours we never expected. If you find yourself struggling with the changes, relationships, diagnoses, or culture you are in, or just feel like you have “fallen off the map” completely, I invite you to come talk with me for an hour.  Together we can explore where you are at today and draw a map for tomorrow.

My clients describe me as warm, engaging, and educational. Whether they are 5 or 85 years old, they often see our times as their “safe space” to try on different versions of themselves and practice new skills. Our success in moving forward lies in building up the resources, flexibility, and confidence to manage the unexpected terrain ahead.

While we are part of many systems, as humans we can also feel isolated in our own experience.  I strive to be authentic during our time so my clients can practice working with vulnerable and tough topics in a safe and secure relationship. I use Systems, Existential, and Reality Therapy approaches to help you reconnect with yourself and those around you in a more meaningful way.  It is not unusual to laugh, cry, and play all in one session!

As clients desire and are comfortable, I am able to integrate spiritual components from either a shared Christian perspective, or a client’s preferred spiritual or expressive background. Art, drama, games, music, tactile, and storytelling are available during sessions.

“Shame dies when stories are told in safe spaces.”

~ Ann Voskamp

Who Am I?

I graduated from Boise State University with a BA in Communication Training, Liberty University with a MA in Marriage and Family Counseling, and received my post-graduate training as a Certified Disability Rehabilitation Counselor from University of Kentucky.

When not working I can be found building robots and making up new recipes with my two foster-adopted children, or wrangling my three dogs (who recently figured out how to get on the roof!). My husband is a tabletop gamer, so I am well versed in most things “gaming” and “comic” and am considering getting a Therapeutic Gaming specialization. My own passion is folklore across cultures, collecting quirky children’s books, and researching pretty much anything!

Services I Provide

Mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel, and act. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make choices. Mental health is important at every stage of life, from childhood and adolescence through adulthood. Mental Health Services also known as modes or types of mental health care sessions can be given in a variety of formats, including:

  • Individual Therapy & Counseling: This therapy involves only the patient and the therapist. Sometimes called psychotherapy or talk therapy is a process through which a client works one-on-one with a trained mental health clinician in a safe, caring, and confidential environment.
  • Marital/Couples Counseling: This type of therapy helps a couple that is struggling with aspects of their relationship. This type of therapy can also be used to help spouses and partners understand why their loved one has a mental disorder, what changes in communication and behaviors can help, and what they can do to cope.
  • Family Counseling: Because family is a key part of the team that helps people with mental illness get better, it is sometimes helpful for family members to understand what their loved one is going through, how they themselves can cope, and what they can do to help.
  • Relationship Counseling: Focuses on improving the relationship between individuals by helping them resolve interpersonal issues. The relationship may fall under the marital, couple or family groups or may be in-laws, friends, co-workers, or other acquaintances.
Telehealth: Also known as teletherapy, generally, refers to individual psychotherapy or talk therapy delivered through technology like video conferencing.

Some Client Concerns I Treat

Mental health crises range from the worries we all experience as part of everyday life to traumatic mental health crisis or serious long-term conditions. Types of Therapy

Psychotherapy, also referred to as talk therapy, psycho-social therapy, counseling, or, simply, therapy, is the primary method for treating mental health problems by talking with a mental health provider. The goal is the help an individual better understand their mental health and teach strategies and tools that manage unhealthy thoughts and behaviors.

While there are many approaches to psychotherapy, there is no single approach that works for everyone. A  therapist may use a blended approach, sampling techniques from several different types of psychotherapy. The kind of psychotherapy a person receives depends on the unique needs. Below are some of the types of psychotherapy I utilize.

  • Systems
  • Existential
  • Choice Theory / Reality Therapy
  • Adlerian
  • Strengths-Based
  • Spiritual, Pastoral
  • Play Therapy
  • CBT – Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
  • Motivational Interviewing.

Therapy Groups

Group therapy is a form of psychotherapy that aims to help people manage mental health conditions or cope with negative experiences and behaviors. One of the goals of group therapy is to bring people who share similar experiences together.

Meeting other people recovering from or working through similar issues helps people realize that they are not alone. Group members and therapists can help each other by sharing information and offering advice. Group members can support, reassure, and help each other improve throughout the treatment. Below are the groups I lead:

  • Art
  • Dual Diagnosis
  • Women Support Group
  • Children
  • Vocational Skill
  • Psychosocial Groups (Youth and Adults)
  • Bullying
  • Childhood Trauma
  • Autism
  • Adoption
  • Men Support Group
  • Post-Incarceration
  • Court-Ordered

Additional Comments

My specialty is vocational assessment, counseling and rehabilitation for individuals with disabilities, learning disorders, complex medical conditions, or behavioral diagnoses that impair employment retention. I also provide career and educational counseling to youth, adults in transition, and anxiety in the school/workplace.  I am available and enjoy working with all ages.

I find clients with personality disorders, schizophrenia, autism, hallucinations, violent crime / incarceration history, complex medical conditions, and obsessive or obsessive compulsive disorders are comfortable and successful with my approach. I speak “gamer,” as well as incorporate play therapy and narrative approaches into my sessions.

I am skilled in using interpreters for non-English speaking clients. I am trained in world cultures and religions. If requested, I can provide Christian based counseling, though can incorporate anyone’s spiritual background into therapy as they desire.

Industries & Communities Served

Community can be defined in many ways, but when simplified down to its most important element, community is all about connection. Community is not just an entity or a group of people, it’s a feeling. It’s feeling connected to others, feeling accepted for who you are and feeling supported.

We’re social beings, and we are not meant to live in isolation. Community is critical for us to thrive, especially for someone with mental illness who is already experiencing the common symptoms of loneliness and isolation. Below are some of the communities I work with to help provide a sense of belonging, support, and purpose.

  • Gay Allied
  • Lesbian Allied
  • Racial Justice Allied

Facility Accessibility

Morgan Health Centers and its Affiliates are outpatient centers and NOT an emergency care facility. In case of an emergency please contact a primary care physician or the local emergency room, police or 911.

Those with disabilities often face major barriers getting the health care services they need. Research shows that, compared to people with out disabilities, people with disabilities are less likely to receive comprehensive preventative care. Improving physical access to health care services is essential to achieving health equity.

We recognize the needs of patients with disabilities, and make every effort to comply with state and federal accessibility regulations and accommodate these patients.

  • Accessible Parking
  • Gender Neutral Bathroom
  • Service Animals Welcome
  • Wheelchair Accessible Building
  • Wheelchair Accessible Restroom
