Creating a Self-Care Plan
Living with mental illness is not easy. While treatments like medication and psychotherapy are incredibly helpful, sometimes people experiencing mental health conditions need to do more day-in and day-out to feel good or even just okay.
Self-care is an important way to protect your physical, mental and emotional health so you can better adapt to changes, build strong relationships and recover from setbacks. You can also better support those around you who might be in need.
A self-care plan can help you enhance your health and wellbeing, manage your stress. Learning to identify activities and practices that support your wellbeing will help you to sustain positive self-care in the long-term.
It is really important that you write your plan down in as much detail as you can manage. Writing your plan down:
- Keeps you from forgetting it!
- Formalizes the process of self-help for you, and helps you take it more seriously
- Records your goals, so that you can know what you were shooting for
- Helps keep you motivated to continue working the plan
